Osteoporosis – Fragile Bones

This is a condition in which bones become weak and brittle and tend to break easily with minor injuries. Women at the age of about 50 and men at about 65 are mostly affected.

Common fractures are at wrist, spine (back bone) and hip. Wrist fracture is treated with plaster application and spine with rest and medications. It is the hip fracture which is a serious injury and usually requires major surgery.

The best preventive measures for osteoporosis are healthy diet and healthy living with physical exercises.

The best diagnostic test is DEXA SCAN. This test is non-invasive without any needle pricks and it is done with person lying down on an x-ray table.

Treatment of osteoporosis is by long term use of medications and physical exercise.
